Encrypting & Wiping files
Encryption
If you have some files which you want to protect from
everybody's eyes ,you can ecrypt them with Stylet File Manager.
Unlike some file managers, which let you to choose 60 different algorithms for
encryption,we use only one which is the best , Rinjdael alghoritm , the AES ( Advanced Encryption Standard).
To be honest , everybody thinks the Rinjdael is the best , we've simply joined the crowd :) .
Stylet uses Rijndael
algorithm with 256-bit key for encryption, created by a two Flemish
guys Joan Daemen and Vincent Rijmen.
Thanks goes to David Burton , who made his implementation of AES with Delphi components.
Important thing about Stylet's encryption method
is that it does not save your password anywhere , not even in a
encyrpted form! That means , if you don't use the right password
, Stylet wouldn't know. Only way with which you can see wither the
file is correctly decoded , is to open it and see weither if it is
corrupted. If it IS corrupted , ( most likely ) you've had entered the wrong password.
Couple of tips before you start playing with encryptrion:
- Don't use any real word as a password. That includes
those words from the dictionary and from the jargon. An 8-letter
password can have (theoratically) 256^8 combinations, while the word
from dictionary can hold 1 000 000 words most , which is not that
much of the problem for today computers . Every decent cracker first checks
for the words from dictionary.
- Don't put your birthday, birthday of your kids ,or anything of that stupid into the password.
- Don't use two numbers at the beginning or at the and of the
password, for example johnny99 or 99johnny .
- Therefore : string like Xne2e3wC is a an example of good password

Wiping
There is no point in encrypting files if you don't get rid of the un-encrypted
files for good. Exception is when you're sending those files over the Internet.
Before we begin , let's quote Wikipedia:
HowFiles are Deleted
Initially, when a file
is deleted ( Removed from Recycle Bin) , it doesn't
really go anywhere. Instead, the "header" or portion of
the file explaining its identity and purpose to the operating
system, is removed. The data is then gradually
overwritten over time. On computers
with large hard
drives used for only checking e-mail
and surfing the Web,
a file may go without being overwritten for weeks or even years.....
As you can see ,when you want to delete some file, which you don't
want to be restored , the delete command is simply not good
enough. There is a big number of programs and hardware which could
retreive your file easily.
It would be quite an irony if you would protect some file with
encryption tool, and let the original (un-encrypted) file to be read
by everyone.
So, How does the wiping ( shreding ) works?
Well , there a people always people who will make the sience out of
everything, including this, but the principle is very simple. The
whole idea is to write some useless ( random garbage ) data onto the
some file's context, and to repeat that operation a big number of
times.
Wiping with Stylet File Manager
Well , our wipe tool can be found under Tools menu.

Important stuff :
- How many times to wipe? The more , the slower , and the better
, the less , the faster , and worse.
- Pattern for wiping: Just put anything you want here.
Note: With Stylet , you can't wipe drives . Although we are
going to release that feature someday ,If you really
have that much big pile of files to get rid from, try using some
programs specialized for that purpose. Or you could use hammer, tall buildings , gas & matches , chainsaw etc.
In Stylet , we preffer good-old baseball and hockey sticks. Have you ever tried to make a home-run with a 120Gb hard-drive?
